Shopping in Dubai
From the world's largest mall to ancient Gold Souks — your complete guide to shopping in Dubai, including tax-free tips, haggling etiquette, and seasonal sales.
Dubai has earned its reputation as a global shopping capital. With over 70 shopping malls, the world's largest gold market, ancient spice souks, outlet centres, and two of the world's biggest annual shopping festivals, there is nowhere else on Earth that offers this combination of scale, variety, and value — especially given the absence of VAT on most goods (5% VAT applies but tourists can claim a refund on departure).
Major Shopping Malls
Dubai's malls are not just shopping centres — they are full entertainment and lifestyle destinations. Most malls are open 10 am–10 pm Sunday–Wednesday and 10 am–midnight Thursday–Saturday.
The Dubai Mall
Downtown Dubai502,000 m² GLA — world's largest by total area
💡 Go on weekday mornings to avoid weekend crowds. The Fountain Show (free) runs every 30 min from 6 pm.
Mall of the Emirates

💡 Ski Dubai day passes sell out — book online at least a day ahead, especially on weekends.
Ibn Battuta Mall
Jebel Ali185,000 m² GLA
💡 Less crowded than Downtown malls. Architecture is genuinely stunning — worth a visit even without shopping.
City Walk
Al SafaOpen-air lifestyle destination
💡 Best visited October–April when the outdoor experience is enjoyable. Christmas and New Year decorations are spectacular.
Dubai Hills Mall
Dubai Hills Estate181,000 m² GLA
💡 One of Dubai's newest major malls (opened 2022). Less crowded than older established malls.
Mirdif City Centre
Mirdif157,000 m² GLA
💡 IKEA is right next door. Combined with the mall it makes a practical full-day outing for families furnishing homes.
Traditional Souks
Dubai's traditional souks in the Deira and Bur Dubai neighbourhoods along the Creek have been trading for over a century. They offer an authentic glimpse into pre-skyscraper Dubai and some genuinely excellent prices if you know how to shop.
Gold Souk
Deira, Old DubaiOne of the world's largest gold markets with over 300 retailers. Over 10 tonnes of gold jewellery is on display at any given time. Prices are based on the daily international gold rate plus a making charge.
💡 Always negotiate the making charge (labour cost) — you can often reduce it by 10–30%. The gold price itself is fixed by the market.
Spice Souk
Deira, opposite Gold SoukA labyrinth of stalls selling frankincense, saffron, dried rose petals, herbs, nuts, and traditional incense. The aromas alone are worth the visit. Open every day including Fridays.
💡 Buy saffron here — UAE-sold Iranian or Indian saffron is significantly cheaper than back home. Verify it is real by rubbing a strand: it should not bleed red instantly.
Textile Souk (Bur Dubai Souk)
Bur Dubai, Dubai CreekHundreds of shops selling silk, cotton, pashmina, brocades, and ready-to-wear garments at prices far below mall retail. Many tailors can make custom items within 24–48 hours.
💡 The souk is busiest and most atmospheric in the evening from 6–10 pm. Arrive via the Dubai Creek Abra (water taxi) from Deira for an authentic experience.
Al Seef Heritage Market
Dubai Creek, Bur DubaiA newly developed heritage promenade with a traditional market feel. Sells handicrafts, artwork, traditional clothing (kandura, abaya), and food. Instagram-worthy setting along the Creek.
💡 More curated and less intense haggling experience than the traditional souks — good for those who find souk-style bargaining overwhelming.

Shopping Festivals & Sales
Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF)
Typically December–January (4–5 weeks)
The world's biggest shopping festival, launched in 1996. Over 5,500 brands participate with discounts of 25–75%. Includes daily fireworks, raffles (cars, cash, gold), live entertainment, and the Global Village outdoor cultural park. Over 5 million visitors attend annually.
Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS)
July–August (8–9 weeks)
Designed to keep residents shopping through the summer. Massive discounts in malls across the city, family entertainment programmes, hotel deals (some of the best prices of the year), and extended mall hours. Great for families with children on school holidays.
Eid Sales
Eid Al Fitr & Eid Al Adha (dates vary)
Both Eid holidays trigger major retail promotions. Malls extend their hours and brands offer storewide discounts. Electronics, fashion, and jewellery see the biggest price cuts. Expect large crowds on Eid day itself.
White Friday (Amazon & Noon)
November (UAE Black Friday equivalent)
The UAE's answer to Black Friday, run by Amazon.ae and Noon.com with competing deals. Also picked up by major retailers both in stores and online. Strong deals on electronics, home appliances, and fashion.
Tax-Free Shopping & VAT Refunds
The UAE introduced a 5% Value Added Tax (VAT) in January 2018 — one of the lowest rates in the world. As a tourist, you are entitled to claim a refund on this VAT on goods purchased in the UAE when you depart, under the Tourist Refund Scheme operated by Planet Tax Free.
How to Claim Your VAT Refund
- When shopping, ask the retailer to issue a Tax Free Tag — not all retailers participate, look for the Planet Tax Free sticker
- Minimum spend per purchase is AED 250 to qualify for a refund
- At the airport, scan your receipts at the self-service kiosks before check-in
- Present your Tax Free Tags and passport at the refund counter
- Refund can be credited to your credit card or paid in cash (cash has a handling fee)
- Allow at least 30 minutes extra at the airport for the process

Haggling Tips
Haggling is expected and respected in Dubai's souks and independent shops. It is not appropriate in malls with fixed-price tags or supermarkets. Here's how to negotiate effectively:
- Start by asking the price, then offer 40–50% of what they ask — this opens the negotiation
- Remain friendly and good-humoured; aggressive bargaining is off-putting and counterproductive
- The "walk away" technique is powerful — start leaving and the price often drops significantly
- Buying multiple items gives you much more leverage to negotiate a bundle price
- Cash is king in souks; vendors often offer better prices for cash vs. card
- Never accept the first counter-offer; always counter back at least once
- Research prices online first so you know what a fair price looks like
Refund & Exchange Policies
Dubai's Consumer Protection Law gives buyers rights to refund or exchange faulty goods. Major mall retailers typically offer:
- 15–30 days exchange period on most products with receipt and original packaging
- Electronics: typically 7–14 days for returns, repair warranty varies by manufacturer
- Sale items: often exchange-only, no cash refunds — check before purchase
- Souk purchases: no formal return policy — inspect carefully before buying
- If a trader refuses a legitimate return, file a complaint with the Department of Economy & Tourism (DET)
