Cost of Living

Dubai has a reputation for extravagance, and while it can certainly be expensive if you let it be, it is entirely possible to live comfortably on a modest budget. The key is knowing which parts of the city are affordable, where locals and long-term residents shop and eat, and how to use the public transport network effectively.

Daily Budget Tiers

  • Budget — AED 150/day: Shared accommodation in Deira or International City, public transport, shawarma and Pakistani restaurants, free beaches and parks
  • Mid-range — AED 300/day: Studio apartment in JVC or Al Barsha, metro plus occasional Uber, mix of home cooking and casual dining, some paid attractions
  • Comfortable — AED 600/day: 1-bed in a decent building, dining out regularly, gym membership, occasional brunch, taxis when needed

Free and Cheap Activities

Dubai has a surprising number of completely free things to do:

  • JBR Beach and Kite Beach — free public beaches with showers and facilities
  • Dubai Frame viewing plaza — free to walk around outside
  • Dubai Creek Heritage area — free walking, abra rides cost AED 1
  • Dubai Miracle Garden — AED 55 (Nov–Apr only)
  • Global Village — AED 25 entry, free to walk around
  • All public parks — free or AED 5 entry
  • Dubai Mall Fountain Show — completely free, runs every 30 minutes

Cheap Eats

  • Shawarma: AED 8–15 at any Lebanese or Egyptian takeaway
  • Biryani at an Indian restaurant: AED 15–25 for a full meal
  • Pakistani restaurants in Deira/Bur Dubai: AED 20–35 for a full meal
  • Supermarket meal prep: AED 150–200/week at Carrefour or Lulu
  • Filipino canteens in International City: AED 15–20 for a rice and protein meal

Affordable Neighbourhoods

The most affordable areas to rent in Dubai are consistently Deira, Bur Dubai, International City, Discovery Gardens, and Al Quoz. A studio in International City can be found for AED 22,000–30,000/year, while a comparable studio in Dubai Marina would cost AED 55,000–75,000/year.

Money Hacks for Dubai Living

Pay annual rent in fewer cheques — landlords discount by AED 5,000–15,000 for 1–2 cheque payments. Use the Careem or Uber Pass for discounted rides. Buy a monthly metro pass (AED 350 Silver, AED 700 Gold) if you commute daily. Time your grocery shopping to hit Carrefour and Lulu evening markdowns.
