A desert safari is one experience that almost every Dubai visitor puts on their list — and for good reason. The rolling red dunes of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, just 45 minutes from the city, offer a completely different side of the emirate. Here is everything you need to know to choose the right safari and make the most of the experience.

Morning vs Evening Safari

Evening Safari (Most Popular)

  • Departs 3:00–3:30pm, returns 9:30–10:00pm
  • Includes dune bashing (4×4 vehicles), sandboarding, camel ride, quad biking (extra cost)
  • Dinner at a Bedouin-style camp: BBQ buffet, shisha, belly dance and Tanoura dance shows
  • Henna painting, traditional Arabic coffee and dates on arrival
  • Price range: AED 150–400 per person depending on operator and inclusions

Morning Safari

  • Departs 8:00–9:00am, returns 11:30am–12:00pm
  • Better light for photography, cooler temperatures
  • Typically includes dune bashing, sandboarding, camel ride, light breakfast
  • No evening entertainment; shorter experience
  • Price range: AED 100–200 per person

Overnight Safari

  • Full evening experience plus sleeping under the stars in a camp
  • Sunrise dune bashing and breakfast before return
  • Price range: AED 400–700 per person

What Is Typically Included

  • Hotel pick-up and drop-off in a shared 4×4 (Toyota Land Cruiser or similar)
  • Dune bashing (30–45 minutes of roller-coaster-style driving over dunes)
  • Camel ride (short ride at the camp)
  • Sandboarding (board provided)
  • BBQ dinner with vegetarian options (evening tours)
  • Non-alcoholic beverages; some premium operators include beer and wine
  • Entertainment (belly dancing, Tanoura spinning dance)

Best Time of Year

October through April is the ideal window. Temperatures are comfortable (18–32°C) and the experience is enjoyable at any time of day. May through September is still possible but evening temperatures remain above 30°C, and the daytime heat (40–48°C) makes morning safaris uncomfortable.

Avoid the Cheapest Operators

Budget operators (under AED 80) typically use older vehicles, rush the dune bashing, serve poor food, and pack 20+ people into camps designed for 8. Spend AED 150–250 for a reputable operator — Arabian Adventures, Platinum Heritage, and Desert Safari Dubai are consistently rated among the best.

What to Wear and Bring

  • Loose, comfortable, casual clothing — avoid formal wear
  • Closed-toe shoes for sandboarding (sandals get filled with sand quickly)
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen (morning safaris especially)
  • A light jacket for evening (temperatures drop after sunset)
  • Camera or phone with good camera — the dunes at sunset are spectacular
  • Small amount of cash for optional extras (quad biking AED 100–150, falcon photography AED 20)

Choosing an Operator

Look for operators with consistent 4.5+ star ratings on TripAdvisor or Google with 1,000+ reviews. Confirm the pick-up time and location clearly before booking. Avoid operators who do not provide a direct phone number or who change the pick-up time repeatedly — these are signs of poor organisation. Booking through your hotel concierge often costs AED 50 more but comes with accountability.
